“The Real”

Toronto Indigenous Fashion Week

SDNR LAUNCHED THE FIRST EVER TORONTO INDIGENOUS FASHION WEEK IN JUNE 2017.

In June of 2017, our co-founder Charlene Lindsay began the initial stages of laying a foundation for the launching of the first ever Toronto Indigenous Fashion Week. After 7 months of blood, sweat, tears, planning, designing, and engaging, the show finally took place in December of 2017. The unfortunate reality of lateral violence within Indigenous communities and among the people played a significant role in how the Fashion Week took form, but the team persisted and plans to continue engaging with this event every year!

This year, the SDNR team is happy to announce that they have officially kicked off their Second Annual Toronto Indigenous Fashion Week which is slated to take place in December 2018.

The show will draw upon Indigenous Fashion, Arts, Cultural Ceremonial practices, Round Table Discussions, as well as a Conference titled: Everyday Indigenous – Truth & Reconciliation. The week will wrap up with two runway shows featuring Indigenous models and actors wearing some of the most sought after attire on the market!

For this year’s show, the SDNR has appealed to the INDIGENOUS YOUTHS living in the most remote regions of Ontario. The team decided to call upon the youths not only because they have so little of an opportunity to partake in such events, but also because they lack access to many of the everyday necessities that urban Indigenous populations have.

Moreover, the launching of SDNR’s Real Toronto Indigenous Fashion Week has been and will always be about lifting Indigenous youths up, mentoring them, providing them a space where they can partake in a cultural fashion week that is exclusively dedicated to them and their artistic creations!

AUGUST 2018 – CALL FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTHS

This year’s event is underway and the team wants to ensure that Indigenous youths, especially those in remote regions of Ontario have an opportunity to participate in the show.
